Writing on Medium

When I first joined Medium, I was eager to get my writing in front of as many eyeballs as possible. So I submitted articles to every publication that would accept me, hoping to take advantage of their large follower counts.

While some of those publications did help grow my audience, I soon realized that each one has its own unique community. Just because a pub has thousands of followers doesn’t guarantee your work will resonate with them. Over time, I learned to focus on publications where my articles were well-received.

Of course, even well-intentioned publications can fizzle out over time. I was thrilled to be invited to an inspiring poetry publication, only to see it stagnate months later. C’est la vie!

I’ve since embraced a balanced approach: submitting to select publications while also self-publishing some pieces. This helps me connect with new readers organically. And when an article really strikes a chord, I’m always pleasantly surprised by how quickly it spreads.

For instance, I recently self-published a piece about virtual banks for digital nomads. I hoped it would connect with others, but never expected so many people to weigh in with their own experiences! The engagement and views made my day.

In the end, it’s less about where you publish and more about writing on topics you care about. Share your unique perspective, and the right audience will find you.

I’m grateful for the connections I’ve made here so far and look forward to many more engaging conversations!

What has your journey on Medium been like? I’d love to hear your stories and insights in the comments!
